What is the Mission of the Church?

During our preparation for the mission field, we had an opportunity to visit several churches including Omaha Bible Church. Our goal was to build a network of ministry partners that can work alongside us as we serve in Africa.

This proved to be an invaluable time for us because of the lessons attained as we developed relationships with these churches. One observation that stood out for us was discovering the drive behind each church.

It was encouraging for us to see how determined and committed they are in fulfilling the mission of the church.

We believe it is critical that every believer embrace a biblical view of the mission of the church. An accurate understanding of biblical mission helps us preoccupy ourselves with proper priority and motivation.

What is the Mission of the Church?: Making Sense of Social Justice, Shalom, and the Great Commission by Kevin DeYoung and Greg Gilbert explains what Scripture says regarding the mission of the church and applies different aspects of it.

There are a number of topics that the book highlights to assist readers in capturing aspects of the church’s mission.

The book provides a survey of the mission taking readers through “mission texts.” The authors present the following as missional texts:

  • Genesis 12:1-3
  • Exodus 19:5-6
  • Luke 4:16-21

They provide a considerable study to show how these texts display God’s mission. It is fascinating to see how these missional texts set a platform for the Great Commission.

The book stresses one overriding mission of the church that will challenge and prompt you to examine yourself to see if you are participating effectively. You’ll have to read the book to find out what it is!

This book is easy to read and the writers provide explanations on several key texts used. For some of you, it will reorient your understanding of the church’s mission and for others, it will provide a reminder of what needs to be reinforced in your pursuit of Christ.
