J.C. Ryle: That Man of Granite With the Heart of a Child

I recently read a biography of J. C. Ryle whose preaching and writing ministry impacted many Christians in the 19th century. His book, Holiness stands as one of the notable works that continues to affect lives in church today.

This biography explains his life from childhood to the time of his ministry endeavors. His unwavering heart for Christ and His Church is demonstrated by his willingness to leave behind the pursuit of riches and wealth. In this book you find a man who had a clear understanding of the gospel as explained in the Scriptures.

We are told that J.C. Ryle’s teaching and preaching consisted of five doctrinal foundations: Scripture being the supreme rule of faith; all men are sinners and need forgiveness; salvation by grace alone through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; justification by faith; and the continual work of the Holy Spirit in a believer that brings about the fruit of the Spirit.

He was also known as a man who was burdened by a need for planting churches. As more houses were developed, he saw the need for people occupying those homes to be exposed to the church.
