Truth is Found in God’s Word

In the days that we are in, do you find yourself longing for the truth? Are you trying to weed through all the misinformation and confusion and find actual facts? Sometimes it can seem like there will never be an end to the search for truth.

Does ultimate truth about anything exist? Look no further, because ultimate and lasting truth is found in God’s Word.

God has graciously revealed himself to us in His Word, the Bible. He revealed himself at various times and in various ways (Hebrews 1:1), but as the London Baptist Confession of 1689 (LBC) puts it in chapter one, he revealed Himself through Scripture “for the better preserving and propagating of the truth.”

The LBC goes on to say that He did this “for the more sure establishment and comfort of the church against the corruption of the flesh, and the malice of Satan, and the world.” Consider the implications of this statement. God not only gave us His Word so that we might promote and defend the truth (1 Tim. 3:15), but so that we might be encouraged and comforted (Romans 15:4, Psalm 119:50).

Consider the way David describes God’s Word in Psalm 19. After spending the first half of the Psalm describing how God reveals Himself through creation, David moves to rejoice in God’s revelation in Scripture.

He says that God’s Word is perfect, sure, right, pure, clean, true, and sweeter than honey. David also lists the benefits of God’s Word to us saying that it revives the soul, makes us wise, brings joy to the heart, and enlightens the eyes.

What a gracious blessing that God would give us the gift of His encouraging and comforting Word.

How is it that we can know that this encouraging and comforting Word of God is true? The LBC goes on to help us see that the Scriptures are true because of their authority. The authority and truthfulness of Scripture comes not from “the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God (who is truth itself), the author.”

We can know that Scripture is true because God is its author (2 Tim. 3:16, 2 Peter 1:19-21). There is no need for an outside source to validate and prove the Bible to be true. It is true because God Himself wrote it! “Therefore” the LBC says, “it is to be received because it is the Word of God.”

If you are looking for ultimate lasting truth in days of confusion, look to God and His Word. Be encouraged, be comforted, and receive the truth given to us by God for our good, and His glory.
