Selected Advent Devotionals

There are several advent devotionals available to families each Christmas season. Below are two that I would recommend to any family looking for a resource to utilize this Christmas in family devotions. Both are available in the Omaha Bible Church Bookstore.

Come, Let Us Adore Him by Paul Tripp contains one devotion a day for the 31 days of December. In the introduction, Tripp shares that we are all very familiar with the Christmas story but that “familiarity tends to rob us of our wonder.

His desire in writing this advent devotional is “that God would use it to recapture your attention” and that “your heart will be surprised by things in this story you’ve never seen before or maybe haven’t seen in a very long time.

The content of the devotional is centered on various aspects of the Christmas story from why the angels sang to how the incarnation reveals our need for salvation through Jesus Christ alone. I’m thankful that whatever the theme or topic, Tripp brings it all back to the gospel. Each day then ends with suggested scripture passages to read and study along with a brief help to parents using this devotional with children.

Prepare Him Room by Marty Machowski is an advent devotion made specifically for families with children of all ages. Four weekly sections are filled with lessons from both the Old and New Testaments, crafts, songs, and a story.

Machowski desires that the devotional will help children and families understand and connect Old Testament promises to their New Testament fulfillment in Christ.

A helpful addition to this devotional is the section on how to use it with three different ages of children: preschool, lower elementary, and upper elementary.

Children at these different ages learn in different ways so it has helpful information for parents on helping children of all ages see the wonderful truths of Christ’s birth.
