The Gospel and Personal Evangelism
Evangelism ought to be an active practice of every true Christian. However, it is one of the most neglected disciplines in many believers’ lives. There are many excuses behind this neglect, but no matter how convincing our excuses may appear to us, the mandate to evangelize is unmistakably charged in the Bible. The nature of the command to evangelize does not provide believers any exceptions for not participating in this mission.
Mark Dever’s book The Gospel and Personal Evangelism has tremendously impacted my understanding of biblical evangelism. This is an evangelism resource I would like to recommend to every believer.
He recognizes various misconceptions on what evangelism is, and he devotes a portion of the book to defining "What is the Gospel?" Here he demonstrates how an accurate understanding of the gospel leads to God-honoring evangelism.
Other questions addressed in this book include:
- Why we don’t evangelize
- Who should evangelize
- What evangelism isn’t
- What to do after we evangelize
- Why we should evangelize
Responses given to these questions are convicting, encouraging, and comforting. It also compels us to reexamine how truly committed we are to proclaiming the good news with the right motives.
