A Small Book for the Anxious Heart

This is a really good little book that I come back to over and over again to turn my heart to the Lord when anxiety, worry, and fear creep into my thinking and emotions. It is a small book - it will almost fit in your hand, but inside you will find 50 daily devotions that use Scripture and wisdom to not only give you the do's and don'ts of the biblical passages on worry, but also to go deeper to work on your relationship with the Lord, to know better how Jesus Christ, the Father, and the Holy Spirit can minister to your heart in the midst of your worries.

This book is not going to promise you a quick fix to your anxiety. In fact it is not designed to be read straight through as if you are devouring a novel, biography, or even attempting to gain a deeper knowledge of a theological doctrine. This book is designed to be read slowly.

Only one chapter a day is at most what the author recommends, and each chapter is short at only two to four pages long. The reason is chapters are short but deep.

Welch will often describe a real-life situation and then bring biblical wisdom to bear followed by questions for us to ponder as we seek to apply these principles to our own worries and fears.

The goal is to help us grasp how God's grace is central to our lives; how Christ's work on the cross applies to us; and how God gives us eyes to see how the power of the Holy Spirit in our hearts can transform how we see the landscape of our world; Together, these give us comfort in the face of real threats to our well-being and the well-being of those we love.

The slow pace of the book achieved through this daily dose of biblical wisdom on anxiety, worry, and fear nudges us slowly but surely toward peace and rest in Christ.

I find myself coming back to this book often and find it refreshing as it shapes my heart, mind, and emotions by the consistent application of Scripture to my life whenever worry, anxiety, and fear creep in.

I highly recommend it, along with another book by Welch that tackles anger in our lives in a similar fashion. It is titled A Small Book About a Big Problem.
