Where Wisdom Is Found

I highly recommend the book Where Wisdom Is Found by J. V. Fesko. John Fesko has preached at Omaha Bible Church and we have attended conferences where he has spoken. I’ve benefited from his teaching and in this book he continues to bless believers as he helps us to better understand the Book of Ecclesiastes.

This book is written at an approachable level. It is appropriate for devotions and provides a good introduction to understanding wisdom literature.

Fesko helps us think through the book of Ecclesiastes and demonstrates how it finds its fulfillment in the crucified and resurrected Christ. Fesko shows that all biblical wisdom literature finds its ultimate fulfillment in Christ, who is wisdom incarnate. Only in Him are we set free from the vanity lamented over in the book of Ecclesiastes.

The mistake many make is reading Ecclesiastes moralistically, as if it were a book of moral principles. They make no effort to connect the scripture to Christ. Can we truly say that any portion of scripture inspired by the Spirit of Christ has nothing to do with Christ?

Are we reading scripture rightly when we walk away with only morals, devoid of a conviction of our need for Christ and the assuring message of His gospel?

Rightly understood, wisdom offers a right outlook on Christ. When the author of Ecclesiastes looks at “life under the sun,” he declares it all as vanity (futile). Apart from God, all pursuits are empty and futile.

But wisdom, rightly understood, offers a right outlook on life and ultimately, Christ. Because it tells us that in the midst of life’s ambiguities, we must not lean on our own understanding but upon Christ.

Fesko reviews and gives commentary on each chapter of Ecclesiastes. He looks at life versus death, rich versus poor, foolish versus wise, and young versus old. From man’s perspective, life is unpredictable, but from God’s perspective, everything is being done according to His plan.

Believers who have found wisdom in Christ know that their lives are in the providential care of their heavenly Father. So whether we experience joy or sorrow, we know we will never be forgotten by our Heavenly Father.

If Christ is true and ultimate wisdom, then the only way we can be wise is by seeking Christ. I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and see that our only sure and true hope is in Christ.
