The Pactum

The ever-burgeoning world of social media welcomed a new podcast recently. It is called The Pactum and is hosted by yours truly and Mike Grimes.

Why another podcast? There are numerous reasons for the new show. Here are five reasons for the new podcast.

First, the medium is a great way to learn. I myself love listening to experts on a myriad of different subjects while I do other things. It is a great use of time.

Second, I think the platform allows me to address important topics that need to be covered, but not necessarily in a Sunday sermon. Trying to work something into the sermon that does not really belong in it is not the best approach.

Third, I enjoy a format where a more light-hearted tactic can be used. Don’t get me wrong, the focus is theological and therefore quite serious. Yet I appreciate a good dose of silly antics away from the pulpit. This means that it will not be everyone’s cup of tea but then again, we rarely drink tea on The Pactum!

Fourth, I think it is a matter of stewardship. By this I mean that the Lord has graciously given us so much by way of theological knowledge. This compels me to utilize different means for sharing what has been entrusted to us with others.

In some ways, I think that our Theology for Breakfast ministry accomplishes this and yet participation is limited given that it is a ministry to our men and schedules are also limiting.

Fifth, the Pactum podcast is a resource that Christians can use to help others by directing them to relevant episodes. For example, if you are talking with someone about the biblical basis for Christ-centered preaching (something bizarrely controversial!), you can direct them to episode 3, which is called, “Christ-Centered Christians.”

Why call the show The Pactum? For starters, it is Latin and therefore sounds cool and ominous! More seriously, here is why we call it The Pactum:

The Pactum is shorthand for the Latin Pactum Salutis. The Pactum Salutis is the trinitarian covenant made before the foundation of the world spoken of in texts such as Ephesians 1 and John 17. It is also known as the covenant of redemption. According to the pactum salutis, the triune God who works all things after the counsel of His will, commits to save elect sinners. Since the pactum salutis is the basis for all of God’s work in human history, we find The Pactum a fitting banner for our conversations of all things theological. https://www.thepactum.org/about-us/

Pretty wonderful, right? The funny thing is that we have never really talked on the show about the name or about who we are. I am sure we will one day, given the importance of the covenant of redemption, but simply getting down to business and ignoring the “who are we and why the name, etc.” has been nice.

No need to feel slighted if this is the first you are hearing about The Pactum. We have purposely kept things relatively quiet at first in order to establish some momentum. There is plenty of time for you to binge listen and get caught up. New episodes release on Wednesdays and we have over a dozen available.

What can you expect from The Pactum in the days ahead? In addition to addressing pertinent theological topics, we will include interviews with Christian authors and thinkers.

We have been intentionally slow to make this step in order to establish our own identity. Rumor has it that there is a demand for some Pactum swag so you can be on the lookout for that also.

You can find out more about The Pactum by visiting www.thepactum.org. We are on Twitter, Instagram, iTunes, Spotify, and other social media platforms. You can support the ministry of the Pactum by supporting Omaha Bible Church. Prayer, encouragement, and five-star ratings are also appreciated.
