The Hole in Our Holiness

I encourage you to read the book The Hole in our Holiness by Kevin DeYoung. In this book, he examines the gap between our love for the gospel and our love for godliness.

The gospel is the ground of our justification and sanctification. DeYoung reminds us of the many exhortations in Scripture to pursue godliness as the fruit of our union with Christ in the power of the Spirit.

Filling the gap between gospel passion and the pursuit of godliness, J.C. Ryle says "we must be holy, because this is one grand end and purpose for which Christ came into the world." He does not merely take away the guilt of a believer’s sin; he does more - He breaks the power! (1 Peter 1:2, Romans 8:29, Eph 1:4, 2 Tim 1:9, Heb 12:10)

We rejoice in what Christ has saved us from yet give little thought and effort concerning all that Christ has saved us for! Shouldn't those most passionate about the gospel and God's glory also be those most dedicated to the pursuit of godliness?

The author of this book shows us in practical ways how our union with Christ changes the way we think and act – from being with Christ to being like Christ. Christ justifies no one who He does not also sanctify. Strive after holiness because you are confident you already belong to God.

I was exhorted and encouraged by this book. Read it yourself as a devotional. Read it with a friend over your lunch hour or at the coffee shop. How and when doesn’t matter. Just read it. And I pray that you will likewise be encouraged and exhorted to godliness.
