Covenants Made Simple: Understanding God’s Unfolding Promises to His People

Over the past several months, I have been teaching the adult Sunday school class, Christ In All Of Scripture, alongside fellow elder, Frank Barber. In the class you hear a lot about the “big picture” of Scripture. How does it all relate or tie together? In my head, I hear all the kids answering and yelling “Jesus!" We smile and agree that, yes that's true, but how do we connect this from Genesis to Revelation?

In his book, Covenants Made Simple: Understanding God’s Unfolding Promises To His People, author Jonty Rhodes carefully demonstrates that at the heart of God’s revelation of Himself to humanity is a well-defined relationship called a covenant relationship.

Covenants shape the whole of Scripture from beginning to end, pointing us to the significance of two main characters: Adam, who in the Garden of Eden was a covenant breaker, and Jesus Christ (the last Adam), who was the covenant keeper. We are born under the curse brought on us by the disobedience of the first Adam, and we are freed from the curse by the obedience of the last Adam.

This excellent book explains what a covenant is, why it matters, and how we cannot understand the Lord Jesus, His work, or His Word without it. It is written in layman’s terms so everyone can better understand the storyline of redemption as God works out His plan. Come connect the dots and see the “big picture” of Scripture and rejoice in our Lord God, Most Holy!
