The Heart of Evangelism

I recently finished reading Jerram Barrs' book on evangelism for one of my classes in seminary, and I found it to be a profound and comprehensive resource, despite its accessible writing style. The depth of information highlights the vital role evangelism plays in the lives of believers and the church.

Barrs effectively builds on the call in 1 Peter 3 for every believer to be prepared to give a reason for their hope they have in Christ. I particularly appreciated how the book emphasizes that evangelism begins with prayer (Chapter 7), a crucial reminder for all Christians.

As Colossians 4:3 suggests, it is entirely appropriate to pray for open doors and for the right words to be spoken. Barrs also highlights the necessity of humility in presenting the gospel (p. 77) and thoughtfully explains that evangelism involves more than just verbal communication; it is also expressed through genuine love for others.

Section Three (Chapters 21-23) addresses the real barriers between the church and the world. This served as a valuable reminder for me, especially as I oversee various ministries, which can in turn create distance from the wider world. I found Chapter 26, "Memorized Summaries of the Gospel," to be particularly insightful. As a youth pastor, I see this as an excellent tool for discipling students in the essential truths of the gospel, though its principles are applicable to Christians of all ages. Barrs correctly notes that it is "valuable for all believers to have a clear outline of the basic truths of the Gospel in mind" (p. 175).

Section Four further develops this by emphasizing that beyond understanding the basic gospel outline, we are called to understand our neighbors' beliefs and perspectives on life. Barrs uses the analogy of building bridges for the gospel (Chapter 30), reinforcing that our love for Christ must extend to a love for our neighbors, enabling us to effectively proclaim the gospel to them.

Although the book contains a wealth of information, I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to grow their confidence in evangelism. It is a truly helpful resource.
