Pastoral Interns

One of the chief pastoral priorities for the church is to disciple men for leadership.
The Apostle Paul exhorted the young pastor Timothy along these lines:

"The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses,
entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." (2 Tim. 2.2)

As a local church, we aim to fulfill this charge.  One way in which we do this is through the Pastoral Internship Program.  This program, ranging from 2-4 years, is designed to give men a training platform for pastoral ministry.  Interns are responsible to complete an aggressive theological reading list, lead in ministry, teach in various settings, and complete required IBS courses.  The end goal of the program is to better equip men to lead and serve in the ministry of the local church.

Wayne Cantwell, Pastoral Intern

Wayne arrived in Omaha in the middle of a blizzard, February 1999, brought here courtesy of the United States Air Force. This was somewhat of a rude awakening as Wayne is from Texas.

On a light note, Wayne is a Texas boy at heart making Texas Roadhouse a regular eating place and walk down memory lane. And yes, he takes seriously his cowboy get-up complete with hat, buckle, and boots.

In August 2008, Wayne entered the pastoral internship program and has been serving in the Institute for Biblical Studies, in areas of administration and teaching. His passion is to see men trained and raised up to be leaders in the local church to the glory of God.  With this in mind, his desire is to complete the pastoral internship to be better equipped in accomplishing that task.

Wayne was saved by the grace of God here in Omaha while serving in the Air Force. He met his wife Shanna at Omaha Bible Church while in the Crossroads ministry. They have now been married for three years and have a daughter, Leah Jasiel.

Wayne currently works as a civilian at Offutt AFB and is also a medic in the Air Force Reserves.

Brian Onstead, Pastoral Intern

Brian was born in Omaha where he has lived his entire life.  He was raised up in the Catholic tradition, but it was not sufficient to keep him from his sin as demonstrated by the severity of his rebellion growing up.  Living for himself, he followed a destructive path which involved much heart-ache for his parents and family, and trouble with the law.  This path of sin left him in desperation and despair.

Being desperate, he was drawn to any book that claimed to offer hope in God.  In 1999, he came across one particular book that invited him to pray a simple prayer to invite Jesus into his heart.  And so he “prayed the prayer” and switched to an evangelic church.  This too proved futile in delivering him from his sin.  Even though there was an external change, his heart was not changed, and he continued in his secret sins and selfish pursuits.

It wasn't until 2005 that God graciously visited him with salvation.  God used the faithful preaching ministry of OBC to bring the word to bear upon his heart and mind.  Being strongly convicted of his sin and the judgment to come, he listened carefully as the gospel was preached.  By the power and work of the Holy Spirit, through the ministry of the word, Brian repented of his sin and trusted Christ for salvation.

Because of this, Brian understands the high importance of faithful preaching and teaching.  God has given Brian a desire to shepherd God's people by faithfully ministering the word of God to them.  In an effort to become equipped to do this, he has entered into the pastoral internship.

Brian is currently enrolled in an excel program where he is working towards a bachelor's degree so that he can move on to seminary.  He is leading Crossroads and Christ on Campus which are ministries to college students and young singles.

Brian works overnight at the Douglas County 911 Center as a dispatcher.  He was recently married to his lovely bride Jackie whom he met at OBC.
