In Scripture we learn that Christ is the head of the church (Colossians 1.18). He is the source, sustainer, purchaser and the ultimate senior pastor of the church.
God has set apart men who have a particular calling and meet the objective requirements of Scripture (1 Timothy 3.1-7; Titus 1.5-9). These men are appointed to the office of elder and serve as the functional leaders of the church under the headship of the Lord Jesus. The particular focus of elders is that of shepherding through teaching, preaching, and prayer.
Additionally, God has specified that men who have distinguished themselves as faithful servants be appointed to the office of Deacon (1 Timothy 3.8-13). Deacons are model servants who assist the elders in facilitating biblical ministry.
